Woody Myers, the Democratic candidate for governor, is calling for a review of a controversial Medicaid program that has allowed county hospitals to divert more than $1 billion in federal money away from nursing homes.

Myers, who is seeking to unseat Gov. Eric Holcomb in November, said he is concerned about the lack of transparency surrounding the program and its impact on the quality of Indiana’s nursing homes. He also accused Holcomb of downplaying the large number of COVID-19 deaths at those facilities.

In a statement, Holcomb said Hoosiers should expect increased quality and value in nursing homes, but declined to say if he thinks the Medicaid program needs to be investigated. The first-term Republican is widely viewed as a favorite in the race and enjoys a significant fundraising edge.
